Art has the power to express through visuals what cannot be explained in words. In Cafe by the Ruins DUA’s latest exhibit, Liquid Currents of Thoughts, artist Kankan Ramos captures the fluidity and abstraction of the mind.
Upon entering the exhibit, our awe was captured by the big pieces of canvas painted in saturated hues of blues, purples, and reds. The pieces reminded us of oceans and islands, like brights maps of places out of this world, perhaps representative of the worlds and maps we create in our mind.
Kankan Ramos’ artist statement reads, “Passion, profession and motherhood. Three seemingly non-related words, but make up the DNA of Kankan.” We draw parallels from these three traits to three elements she used in her artwork – color, motion, and texture.
COLOR: Blues are the main hue in her paintings, and in contrast, shades of red, white, and gold are splashed alongside it, giving a chaotic mood that is also still very peaceful.
MOTION: The colors seem to be perpetually flowing throughout the canvas, creating illusions of tide and of push and pull.
TEXTURE: Kankan adds texture by using surprising materials such as quilled paper, breaking the motion of the paint, and creating what looks like islands.
Kankan Ramos, hailing from Manila, is an advertising professional and has been in the advertising industry for more than 20 years. Being a mother and an executive, she still found time to work on her artistic passion, exploring different techniques and styles. Her work has made it all the way to be exhibited in New York.
“As an artist and a marketer, I think I can help people not only to get to understand something with their minds but also to feel it emotionally and physically. Art can help mitigate the effects created by the negativity that we as a society is faced today.
The arts represent one of the few areas in our society where people can universally come together to share their own experiences.
Art can connect you to your senses, body, and mind. It can make the world felt. And this feeling may spur thinking, engagement, and even action.”
The Liquid Currents of Thoughts is the last exhibit of Cafe by the Ruins DUA for 2017. Catch it while you can! We’re also very much looking forward to next year’s lineup! Spoiler alert: One of WTB’s members will be exhibiting here next year. Yay!
