We’ve been to quite a few author’s talks on Mount Cloud for some time now, but this time, the latest author’s talk was a bit different as graphic novelists Rob Cham and Russel Molina took the stage. These authors were not only there to promote their books, but also to share their experiences and some insights in the Philippine literary scene (which is usually how these author’s talks go, but each author has his or her story to tell, and that’s what makes these little talks worth it).
We got to Mount Cloud a bit late, but still in time for us to reach Rob Cham share his life stories, some of them dating back to his high school days, which have contributed as inspiration for his books, “Light” and “Love”. His books are particularly interesting because he tells stories without the use of words. Rob Cham shares that this aspect of his comic book creation has been very challenging, but also worth it. His book, “Light” is a finalist for the National Book Awards.
Russel Molina, on the other hand, has worked as a writer for children’s books but has transitioned into writing comics. Russel’s work “66” has also garnered a nomination for the National Book Awards. One of his comic books that we purchased is entitled “12:01” which offers an interesting perspective on the Martial Law Period in the Philippines. It’s definitely a conversation-starter.
Together, Rob Cham and Russel Molina also shared some tips on how to put yourself out there as an aspiring comic book artist. They noted the importance of social media in terms of self promotion. Rob also mentioned that joining comic cons and selling self-published works there is another strategy for gaining connections in the Philippine comic scene.
We couldn’t leave the author’s talk empty-handed, so we had our newly purchased comic books signed by Rob and Russel. -insert internal fangirl squealing-
We highly encourage you to get yourself a copy of Rob Cham’s and Russel Molina’s works of visual poetry. These quality literary pieces are not only candy for the eyes, but food for the soul and mind. Available at Mt Cloud Bookshop!
