Since 1999, the 21st of March had been officially ordained by UNESCO as World Poetry Day, and what better way to celebrate the day than by performing and listening to spoken word poetry at Mt. Cloud Bookshop?
Mt. Cloud, the hub for local literature, has been holding an open-mic event on every third Monday of the month, which they call the Third Monday from the Sun. Absolutely anyone is welcome to perform their own written pieces or even pieces by other authors.
It’s been a while since we’ve been here, and we’ve been greeted by a special treat, the premiere of films by Mickey Zarate of Cinematheque. His short films were shot in none other than Mt. Cloud Bookshop.
Once the ball got rolling on the poetry reading, we felt a roller coaster of emotions with poems about relationships, heartbreak, distance, rants, identity, and even love for Baguio. Everyone is passionate with what they have to share.
Here, diversity in culture and idealism is celebrated, and newcomers are especially encouraged to perform! At Mt. Cloud, you will definitely feel the warmth and acceptance of its small, growing group of poetry lovers.
Even songs and dance can be performed. Again, it’s an open-mic event, so anything goes!
This year’s World Poetry Day was just the beginning for us. We’ll definitely be back to enjoy even more original pinoy-brand poetry.
So if you’re looking for a community of poetry lovers, or if you have your own poems to share, why not join the next Third Monday from the Sun, every third Monday of the month at Mt Cloud Bookshop?
